What is Qigong?
QiGong is a defensive form of the martial arts that was developed in China 3,000 years ago and like Tai Chi incorporates breathing. From the Chinese ‘Qi’ meaning air and ‘Gong’ meaning exercise, QiGong is an ancient breathing technique that can be incorporated into modern life. The benefits of this simple yet powerful method of breathing are many, and can influence the mind and body by nurturing the spiritual connection between the two.
Breathing is essential to life; a simple reflex that we take for granted. But most people do not breathe correctly and this can have cumulative damaging effects on the body. Tight modern clothing, constant stress and tension contribute to our poor breathing patterns. Correct breathing balances energy, reduces stress and helps to cleanse the body and lift the spirit.
The yogis of the east and women in childbirth are able to control pain through conscious breathing. Scientific research has shown that changes in the rate and depth of breathing releases endorphins. These are the body’s natural pain killers and promote feelings of well being.
Taking a deep breath into the navel point changes our posture, we become more conscious of the physical body and achieving a better posture increases our confidence. Deep breathing brings new energy and releases oxygen into the body, eliminating both toxins and stale energy to create a feeling of lightness and well being.
Breathing correctly can help treat digestive problems, insomnia, depression, rheumatic pain and headaches. Regular daily practice provides physical and emotional benefits channelling healing energy to purify the mind and the body.
